Tattoos are becoming more and more popular and demonstrate a very modern and unique personality within our contemporary society. Gone are the days when tattoos were seen merely as impulsive and expensive, regrettable decisions made in the heat of the moment on a social night out. Nowadays, they hold a profound significance for many who own them. Sentimental value, cherished memories, religious beliefs, or a loved one are all examples of what makes a Tattoo mean something to many people.
In a recent conversation with a tattoo enthusiast from Leeds Sam Shepperd (22), I gained valuable insights into the heartfelt meaning behind what a tattoo can symbolise. Sam shared intimate details about his tattoos, illustrating how they are close to his heart and with his own personal journey. For instance, a poppy featured on his chest symbolises love for his younger sister, while a moth of which he fears most displayed on his arm, demonstrates his courage to confront his fears head-on. Notably, the Manchester bee inked on his forearm pays homage to a family member caught in the tragic Manchester bombings.
Reflecting on the ownership of tattoos, Sam went on to give his own perspective: “The idea of having something that permanently stays with you for the rest of your life is of course daunting but when something means that much to you, every time you look in the mirror your reminded of its purpose and it gets you through each day”. His passionate endorsement of tattoos demonstrates the power and significance that having a tattoo can have on your life’s journey.
