Week five task

In these first shots I captured them using the burst mode so that I was able to capture a selection of shots which would give me a selection of images to choose from. I asked my subject to jump into the air so that I could get the effect I was looking for.

In this image, I asked my subject to move his head and body at a fast pace in order to capture the fast movement of his extremities with the camera. The result was that his head was captured in a blurry shot as the pace of his movement was too much for the camera to bring into shot accurately, however the background is all still in natural shot.

Project updates

April 15th

After only just deciding on what I wanted to do for my project I had began taking test shots of house animals to test what type of shots are best for fitting animals in via use of different aperture as well as different depth of fields. I took these photos into photoshop to work with the brightness and contract settings to see whether I should go to take my final images on a day when the weather is of a certain type, which I found waiting for a brighter day would be better.

April 22nd

I decided to go to the zoo as a test run rather than going for one day to film my final shots just so I had some backup shots in case anything was to go wrong. I found this very useful as it gave me an idea of what types of angles I would be able to access as well as what enclosures and access you have to each animal. This gave me the best chance of preparation for when I created my final shots as I knew which animals would be relevant for where I wanted to go with the story.

April 29th

In what ended up being one of the hotter days of the year I went to the zoo to take my final shots. The weather played greatly into my hands as the bright blue sky made for some great shots. Despite having a set of test shots, I found that with the weather being so picturesque, I used all but one picture from my second visit.

May 7th

Having settled on all of my images I had took them all into photoshop to give them the post production needed to make them look even better. Through the skills I had learnt during this module I was able to go through these photos and give them the work that brought out each individual image in its own different way that fit the image.

May 12th

After writing my story and putting it all together I spent a few hours on the final day going over it one final time and ended up changing one photo which I thought was better for my story in comparison to the one that was on show beforehand.

Week six task

I chose two images that I thought were good images that could have been greatly improved with minor changed, Through experimenting with photoshop I believe the images are of a much higher quality.

The first image was taken at Old Trafford, Manchester United’s ground. I thought the image had great potential, however the was some minor flaws such as the top of the image being clouded over by the edge of the roof. That as well as some potential colour changes were the two things I wanted to change in order to feel as though this image was complete.

In the completed photo, the roof was cropped out which felt as though it let more natural light into the photo. I also ended up increasing both the brightness and contrast in order to bring as much light into the image as possible, creating what I believe was a much improved final result.

The second image I chose was one in the Leeds Beckett tennis centre. I chose this one as in contrast the the picture at Old Trafford, it is a dark setting and the layer changes would therefore need to be very different which I thought would be something interesting to play with.

In the second image I cropped it in slightly so the court in focus was the only thing in shot. As well as that I took the brightness down slightly but increased the contrast. As well as that I slightly increased the exposure to counteract the lighting of the tennis centre.

Week four task

In the first image the F stop is on it’s lowest possible setting, by doing this, Robbie is the sole focus of my shot and the background has no influence on the shot at all

In the second image the F stop is of a middle level, by doing this, Robbie is still the key factor within the image but you can begin to see some of the background, this shot is a commonly used one as it shows the key part of the image without completely negating the background

The final image is with the F stop at the highest possible setting, the one is the shot that shows the background most clear

I believe the shot where the F stop is at a middle level is the best shot as it is a blend of high quality mixed with some sort of a background. All three shots have different uses and can all be very effective. With the F stop low it really emphasises something specific which can be important, likewise with a high F stop showing a detailed full image.

Extra credit

This image shows three bottles lined up with the F stop at a medium level, with this shot it shows a clear shot of all bottles as well as some of the background. This shot is a neutral shot that would be used for the majority of photography.

This image is with the F stop low, this image brings out the front can and makes the back two bottles less in focus within the shot. With this image the background is also of little focus and doesn’t have much impact within the shot

Week two task

Sports photography

This, the earliest photograph in “Who Shot Sports,” is the work of Hill and Adamson, regarded by Buckland as the greatest practitioners of the calotype “a paper negative that was ‘developed’ after a short exposure” which was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in 1840.

Challenges:

Correct lighting to get the right shot – if the lens is not correctly adjusted the camera could potentially not show a clean view thus ruining the shot

Getting the shot during fast paced sports – during fast paced sports like ice hockey where the puck moves quick and is very small it can be a challenge to keep track of it and get everything in shot

Getting a clean shot with everything the frame and in focus, shots often aren’t always about one person but also background shots and getting all of that in frame can be a challenge

Week one task

Students at Leeds Beckett University have began preparation for the forthcoming exam period for many students’ final year exams.

Headingley campus, Leeds Beckett university begins to ramp up as students start their preparation for the end of year rush.
As the weather gets brighter, the mood on campus has become more bleak, as the march revision period has hit

As March begins many students have started their preparation for the exam period starting in April with many spending time in the libraries revising and completing their work.

With many students working on their final year dissertations, the feeling on campus is one of a serious nature, with many students keen to get them extra few marks.

When asked about his preparation for the the upcoming period, third-year Beckett student, Louis Evans said the following “Obviously it’s not the most fun period but you’ve just got to get on with it, now is the time to put all the hard work into action and make sure I get through uni, which was obviously always the aim”.

With dissertations due and exams to prepare for, maximum focus is paramount for these students.
