Reflection week 4

In this weeks workshop we learn’t how to use a camera and also how to use the camera on a Iphone. We solely focused on the apeture and the F-stop when taking pictures.

We were set a task of going out and taking three images, one with the F-stop low (F/1.4), one with the F-stop medium (F/8), and the final one with the F-stop high (F/16).

In this workshop I learn’t that the lower the F-stop is, the higher the focus will be on the specific object, but the background will be a lot more blurrier. As the F-stop gets higher the light gets lower, but the picture as a whole becomes more focused.

I particularly liked this task as I enjoyed taking photos of all different objects in Leeds City centre and playing around with the F-stop on my Iphone, and getting used to the setting.

Assessment pitch

For my photojournalism assignment, I’m going to do, how a cricket team prepares for the season.

I am going to focus on new signings, the clubs captain and any young stars who are pushing to be in the first team. I want my pictures to solely be focused on them, but also of them to be in action during net sessions.

I am aware that our new captain used to play at a high level at which he got paid for, so when writing my story about him underneath the photo, I will ask him about that.

In general, I am just going to ask players how they prepare to get ready for the season, and if there are any routines that they go through.

I will also look behind the scenes and speak to some of the committee members and ask them what preparation looks like for them in the build up to a cricket season, because that will be different to the players as they will oversee the finances etc.

Week 2 reflection

In week 2 of Photojournalism, we were taught and looked into all different types of photojournalism. This was obviously all new to me as I hadn’t done anything to do with photojournalism before, so i was starting from a clean slate.

The two styles that I liked the most was documentary and candid photos, and after going through all different styles of photojournalism we were then set our task for week 2, which was to find three images of a stye of photojournalism that we has just spoke about, do some research into and write 150/200 words about the chosen style.

My chosen style was photography and i then went on to do some research into some documentary photographers and then found four of the most famous examples of documentary photography and added a little bit of context to them.

After going over the photos, I looked into some techniques of documentary photography and how i can emulate them in my assessment.

Week 1 reflection

In week 1 of Photojournalism, we were given an introduction into the module, an overview of the assessment, and we were set our first task.

We were set the task of finding a story in Leeds or the surrounding areas, taking photos of it and producing a little written piece underneath it.

For my task i chose to take a picture of the the ‘street art’ in Headingley. Headingley is full of street art everywhere you go, and I chose this topic as is it has in the past been in the news about the amount of ‘street art’ in Leeds, and the promotion and publication of it.

Overall for the first task of Photojournalism, I actually really enjoyed it and I enjoyed taking my photos and researching more into the history of ‘street art’ in Leeds.

Shutter speed

A person jumping in the air, captured using burst mode.

To allow me to take this photo, I used the burst mode feature on my Iphone, to allow me to capture the moment of the person jumping in the air, off the ground, and it also makes the picture very clear. When using burst mode, every other picture that I took of the person jumping turned out to be blurry, but this one turned out to have the highest resolution, and also turned out to be the moment the person was in the air.
